Lentils are among the healthiest foods you can eat. Pea-sized legumes that can be brown, red or green, lentils are a high fiber and high protein food that can help aid your weight loss efforts.
Besides a good amount of fiber and protein, lentils also contain several important benefits for overall health and well being.
Lentils are exceptionally rich in folic acid, which can help to prevent heart disease. Lentils also provide iron for vegetarians, helping to ward off anemia.
They are also a good source of magnesium, which can help to lower blood pressure.
How Lentils Help With Fat Burning
Low in Calories and Fat
Whether you are looking to cut back on calories or on fat, lentils are a good option for both. There is only about 115 calories in a half cup serving of cooked lentils, with just about .5 grams of fat when cooked in water.
With lentils being low in calories and in fat, you can feel good about adding them to your diet.
High in Protein
Lentils are a high protein food. Though the protein found in lentils is considered to be an incomplete protein, you can eat other foods such as beans during the day to complete the protein.
In a half cup serving of lentils there is 9 grams of protein, which can help build lean muscle and tissue.
Replacing fat with lean muscle tissue will cause your body to have a higher resting metabolism, which means it will burn more calories on its own while you aren’t doing anything.
High in Fiber
Foods full of fiber are vital for any weight loss program. Fiber keeps you satisfied as well as keeps you feeling full throughout the day.
A half cup serving of lentils provides 8 grams of fiber, which helps to contribute to the recommended 21 to 38 grams of fiber per day.
