Essential oils have been used for thousands of years in cultures all around the world. The particles in these oils come from extracting different parts of plants, which can include the leaves, bark, roots, and flowers.

These oils can be used for aromatherapy, personal beauty care, natural medicine treatments, and household cleaning products. Using essential oils as natural remedies are becoming a popular choice in many households. Here are some of the best ways to use essential oils.

Essential Oil Uses for Cleaning and Home

All-purpose cleaner: Add three drops of lemon and tea tree oil into a few ounces of warm water. Pour into a spray bottle and use on countertops to naturally disinfect them.

Mosquito repellent: Combine one drop of lemongrass, citronella, and eucalyptus oil with one teaspoon of coconut oil. This will make a bug repellent lotion that can be rubbed onto exposed skin.​

Clean sports gear: Add two drops of tea tree and lemon essential oil to one quart of water. Mix in four tablespoons of baking soda. Spray into any smelly sports gear, such as jerseys, and cleats.​

Freshen trash can: Put two drops of lemon and tea tree essential oil onto a cotton ball. Place at the bottom of trashcans to decrease odor and detoxify.​

Clean produce: To clean vegetables and fruits, add two drops of lemon oil to a bowl of water.​

Homemade sunscreen: Combine coconut oil, zinc oxide, shea butter, helichrysum and lavender oil. Store in a squeeze bottle and you have non-toxic sunscreen.​

Bathtub scrub: Combine half a cup of baking soda with half a cup of vinegar and five drops of bergamot or lime oil. Use as a bathtub cleaning scrub.​

Bathroom freshener: Soak a cotton ball in lime or lemon oil behind the toilet.​

Remove shower curtain scum: Mix four drops of eucalyptus and tea tree oil with warm water in a 16-ounce spray bottle. Spray onto your shower and shower curtain to kill mold.​

Carpet cleaner: Combine 20 drops of tea tree oil with Borax for a homemade carpet cleaning powder.​

Bad smelling shoes: Mix a few drops of tea tree and lemon oil to freshen up the bad shoe smell.​

Freshen up fridge: When cleaning the fridge or freezer, add a few drops of lime, grapefruit, or bergamot oil to your rinsing water.

Cleaner dishes: Add a few drops of lemon oil to your dishwasher for a spot-free rinse.​

Remove cigarette smoke smell: Put four drops of rosemary, tea tree, and eucalyptus oil into a bottle with some warm water. Simply spray around the house to remove cigarette smoke.​

Body butter cream: Mix coconut oil, shea butter, magnesium oil, and your favorite essential oils to make a moisturizing body lotion.

Lip balm: Combine beeswax, coconut oil and lavender oil for a healing balm for lips.

Massage therapy: Mix drops of lavender or cedarwood oil with an unscented lotion to create a relaxing massage.

Reduce anxiety: Diffuse lavender oil to help reduce stress and tension.

Improve sleep: Sprinkle a few drops of lavender oil on your pillow. This will help eliminate insomnia.

Rapid relaxation: Apply 2-5 drops of lavender, chamomile, and peppermint oil to your temples. These oils will create a cooling effect and trigger immediate relaxation.

Foot bath: Add lemon or eucalyptus oil to a large bowl of warm water. This will help to soothe your feet after a long day.

Detoxing bath: Add Epsom salt, lavender oil, and sea salt to a warm bath. This will cleanse and rejuvenate your body.

Essential Oil Uses for Skin and Beauty

Natural perfume: Put 1-2 drops of jasmine oil on your wrists. This will give you a naturally fresh scent. Vanilla and lavender are also a great scent for women, Men should try cypress and clove for a natural cologne.

Acne face wash: Mix tea tree oil with raw honey. Rub onto your face and then rinse off with warm water. Using this will help eliminate acne.​

Fresh breath: Drop some peppermint oil into your mouth to help freshen your breath.​

Homemade shampoo: Combine lavender and rosemary oil together with aloe vera and coconut milk. Use this homemade shampoo as regular shampoo. Lasts 2-4 weeks depending on hair length.​

Deodorant: Combine coconut oil, beeswax, and your favorite essential oil. Our favorite oils to use are cedarwood, clove, lavender and tea tree oil.​

Sugar scrub: Add a few drops of your favorite essential oil to almond oil and sugar. This will make a sugar scrub that can be used as an exfoliating agent.​

Toothpaste: Mix sea salt, baking soda, coconut oil, peppermint essential oil, and xylitol to make your own toothpaste.​

Itchy scalp: In your shampoo add in lavender, cedarwood, or basil oil to reduce scalp itching.​

Strengthen nails: Mix ten drops of frankincense, myrrh, and lemon oil with two tablespoons of vitamin E oil. Rub mixture into cuticles.​

Whiten teeth: Take freshly mashed strawberries, coconut oil, and lemon oil, then run onto your teeth. Let sit for 2 minutes.​

Reduce stretch marks: Mix five drops of frankincense, myrrh, and grapefruit essential oils into coconut oil. Apply to stretch marks, daily.​

Skin toner: In 8-ounces of water add two drops of lavender, geranium, and frankincense. Use every time you wash your face.​

Deep hair conditioner: Combine fifteen drops of rosewood, five drops of sandalwood and lavender into coconut oil. Put ingredients into a small plastic bag, and dunk into warm water to heat it up. Apply to your hair and cover with shower cap for 20 minutes. Rinse and shampoo as usual.​

Dry cracked feet: Mix two tablespoons of coconut oil with three drops of lavender oil. Apply to your feet every night before bed and cover with socks.

Essential Oil and Natural Medicine

Migraine relief: Apply peppermint and lavender essential oil to your temples.

Relieve nausea: Breath in peppermint oil to alleviate nausea. Apply to your neck and upper chest. Lavender and ginger can help elevate nausea.​

Reduce a cough: Diffuse eucalyptus oil. This will work to open your airways and fight off coughs.​

Heal burns: Take aloe vera and mix in lavender oil to help with burns.​

Relieve PMS: Add two drops of sage, basil, and rosemary to a warm moist hand towel. Apply towel to your abdomen.Not all essential oils are made the same. Some oils are often synthetic and could worsen your health. Make sure that your essential oil is certified pure therapeutic grade oils.​

One of the beginner mistakes that I made was just going with the first (lavender) oil I ran into, which gave me a headache. So make sure you check the manufacturers background and choose therapeutic or food grade oils that are organic and sustainably produced.
